How to choose the right door handles

Making our home look its best is constantly on my mind. Whether you are doing a complete home renovation or want to simply change the little details of your home – replacing old and worn door handles is a great start! However, as you might already be aware, choosing door handles is more difficult than it looks…

Today, I’ve partnered up with Ironmongery Experts who specialise in types of door handles. They are a family-run business that sells high-quality hardware for homes and commercial spaces, including anything and everything you need for your doors (door handles, door hinges, door latches, door locks and more!).

There are a million and one door handles which vary in design, style and finish. Yes, you could go for standard and practical door handles but, if you truly want to make a change in your home, it’s important to choose door handles that perfectly balance function and design.

As writer Tim McKeough comments in this article on The New York Times, “New hardware can go a long way toward making even the most ordinary doors look special.” However, there are a few things to consider when choosing the right door handles for your home and that’s what we’re going to talk about today.

Should I go for doorknobs or lever handles?

Depends on the placement and usability. As the team at Ironmongery Experts ask in a blog post “Will everyone at your home be able to use a lever handle or a door knob? Are the door handles suitable for the elderly or for young children?” Doorknobs might be more difficult to operate by the elderly, children and some disabled people, so lever handles might be a better option as these provide a better grip.

Should I match the style of the handle to my house?

Honestly, that comes down to personal preference. Blog Bay Bee says that if you want visually interesting interiors, forget about finish coordination. I would go one step further and say that the same applies to style. You can definitely go for the same style hardware as your home and have the same finish all throughout your home but it isn’t a rule that you have to. Who said that a traditional home doesn’t look good with modern hardware? Or vice-versa? I say, have fun with it and choose the style and finish that makes you happy!

As this blog post on Pretty Big Butterflies mentions, “you can mix and match different finishes, you can have the same finish all around your home, you can layer modern and vintage styles”. The choices are endless! It’s your home, so give it personality and make it stand out.
