Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work Well in the Winter?

When this fluid is exposed to outdoor temperatures, even if they are seemingly cold, the fluid boils and evaporates, absorbing heat energy in the process. This vapour is then compressed, raising its temperature further. The hot vapour is then passed through a heat exchanger, which transfers the heat to your central heating system to warm up the house. 

The system then cools the refrigerant fluid again, converting it back into a liquid, and the process repeats. 

Performance of Air Source Heat Pumps in Winter 

The efficiency of any heating system is typically measured by its co-efficient of performance (COP). The air source heat pump’s COP decreases slightly with lowering external temperatures but remains useful even in freezing conditions. 

Technology advancements have also seen the introduction of pumps that can operate efficiently down to temperatures of -25°C, although such temperatures are unlikely in most parts of the UK. 

For normal winter temperatures in the UK, air source heat pumps can indeed keep homes warm and cosy. 

Benefits of Air Source Heat Pumps 

While operating efficiently in the winter is a significant advantage of air source heat pumps, they also offer several other benefits. 

These pumps are safe – you don’t need to worry about carbon monoxide leaks or hazardous substances. They are also eco-friendly, emitting fewer carbon emissions than conventional heating systems. 

Moreover, they can provide both heating and cooling, making them useful throughout the year. Although the initial cost of installing an air source heat pump might be high, you may recover this cost over time with reduced energy bills. 

Even when the winter cold sets in, there is still enough heat in the outdoor air for an air source heat pump to capture and use to warm your home. While the pump’s efficiency might slightly dip with extremely low temperatures, for the majority of the winter season in the UK, an air source heat pump can effectively keep you warm. 

Balancing the benefits it offers, including the eco-friendly operation, all-year-round suitability, and eventual cost savings, an air source heat pump is indeed a viable heating option, even in the coldest month.
