From epilepsy to neurodegenerative diseases, anxiety disorders and chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia. Several studies have shown the potential effectiveness of CBD in the treatment of some diseases.
Besides, cannabidiol (CBD) is an active ingredient in the Cannabis sativa plant.
In recent years, scientific interest in this component of the substance has grown, leading many countries to authorise its use for specific medical needs.
We are now giving you more details about CBD use against stress and anxiety. But you can also learn about this subject by following this link.
Why should you use CBD?
Among the potential benefits of CBD is the treatment of stress, anxiety and sleep disorders. But there has been little research in this area.
For this, two European scholars have decided to conduct an online survey aimed at people who use the active ingredient to understand better the patterns of use, dose and self-perceived effects of CBD.
430 people took part in the anonymous 20-question survey, but 15 of them did not answer, while 28 said they didn’t just use CBD. Eventually, the sample consisted of 387 users who reported cannabidiol usage patterns, reasons for use and effects on anxiety, stress and sleep disorders.
The researchers analysed the responses who reported the results in one study. As a result, 43% of respondents approved using CBD against self-perceived anxiety, 84% reported feeling less anxious after using the substance, 37%, on the other hand, approved use against self-perceived stress, reporting (92.2%) that stress levels dropped after taking cannabidiol.
Finally, overall, 42.5% approved sleep as a reason for use.
Most people who participated in the study revealed that cannabidiol improved symptoms related to several ailments.
But, in this area, research needs to take further steps, to understand whether CBD can help treat these symptoms efficiently and safely and thoroughly establish the effectiveness of cannabidiol against these ailments.
Cannabis and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Inhaled cannabis appears to have short-term beneficial effects on OCD symptoms. This is supported by researchers from the Department of Psychology at Washington State University, where researcher studied the effects of the hemp-derived substance on the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
The research, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, first examined the acute effects of cannabis on OCD symptoms in humans. No study had done this before and therefore little is known about the subject.
Scientists have tried to understand if the disorder’s symptoms are reduced after inhalation of cannabis and if the symptomatic changes depend on sex, time, dose and components of the substance.
Not only. They also looked at the potential long-term consequences of using cannabis to self-medicate symptoms of OCD, including changes in dose and underlying symptom severity over time.
Data from 87 patients were analysed and monitored for changes in their symptoms with the help of an application.
In addition, the sample monitored the severity of their compulsions and anxieties immediately before and after 1810 cannabis use sessions (equal to a 31-month period).
The research results show, after the period of cannabis inhalation, a 60% reduction in compulsions, a 49% reduction in intrusions and a 52% decrease in anxiety.
The researchers also pointed out that higher concentrations of CBD and higher doses of the substance may be associated with a more significant reduction in compulsions. Over time, changes were also observed in intrusions, so much so that subsequent consumption sessions were associated with a minor decrease in this aspect.
The study has significant limitations, given that the sample was self-selected and self-identified as suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder. In addition, there was no control group, which should have been given a placebo.
In conclusion, the researchers explain that inhaled cannabis appears to have short-term beneficial effects on symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, it is clear that the important limitations of work require more in-depth studies, with a sample flanked by a control group.
